"I would like to be an architect, sculptor and painter all at once"; declared an ambitious Joseph Giunta to a journalist from a Quebec newspaper in 1965. Joseph Giunta, a Canadian Italian artist painter of Sicilian origin, was born in Montreal Canada in 1911. He studied at the Monument National, the Montreal School of Fine Arts, and at the art school of Edmond Dionnet. Giunta also studied abroad in such places as Boston, France and Italy.
J.Giunta was influenced successively by the great masters of the contemporary art period, by the impressionists and the Fauves, especially Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse. In 1936, flanked by Marc-Aurèle Fortin, he presented his still life, street scene, floral art oil paintings and drawings at the Fine Arts Department of Maison Eaton. For a period that spanned over 30 years, between 1931 and 1963, his works were on exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' Salon Printemps (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal), and the Canadian Hall of Fine Arts in Montreal , as well, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec purchased 8 original art oil paintings, which where landscape paintings of the Laurentians and areas around Montréal, and Québec.
Beginning in 1958 Giunta turned toward abstract art, abstract expressionism, mixed media collage/assemblage art and finally to sculpture type montage 3D artwork. He was influenced by artists such as Paul Klee, Tapies, Kandinski, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, and Jackson Pollock.
In 1970, Giunta accepted a special invitation by the Government of Quebec to show paintings at the World's Fair in Osaka Japan, while simultaneously, the Zannetin Gallery circulated Gunta's collage work throughout his native province in Canada. Five years later the sudden death of his only son served as the catalyst for a long series of powerful and passionate sculpture type montage 3D artwork in which Giunta attempted to reconstruct his world.
During the 90s, he showed collages and constructions at the Vieux Presbytère de Saint-Bruno, the Gallery of the Alliance Française in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and, finally, the Vieux-Palais in Saint-Jérôme, among original fine art works by Ayotte, Beaulieu, Cosgrove, Fortin and Lyman.
Giunta died in January 2001, just as he was preparing for a major exhibition at the Maison de la culture Frontenac in Montreal, Quebec-an event that sparked the interest of the artistic milieu and fostered the discovery of this little-appreciated collage / assemblage & construction 3D art work.
Filmmaker Pepita Ferrari paid Giunta a fitting tribute, vibrantly portraying the artist's life through his fascinating art career and striking artwork. A moving portrait documentary art film that has won 5 awards in 3 countries: Canada, United States and France. Find out why !" ...feel the power and the passion of the human spirit ." GRIFFIN, John The Gazette, Montrea, 24 November 2001.
